Arthur Millican Jr. is a former Disney artisan that moved
to Blairsville Georgia to pursue a new dream. From his new 2,500 sq. ft. studio
work shop he creates hand crank toys called Automata, which is an old world
craft. One of his most popular creations is the Leprechaun in the jar. A simple
hand crank animates all. The Leprechaun bangs his fists against the jar. He also
creates unique tree houses, hillbilly doghouses that are made out of old whiskey
barrels, as well as themed outhouses and tool sheds.
At a young age it was his dream to work for
Disney. It
became more of a reality when he and his family moved from Lexington Mass. to
Florida in 1972.
Upon graduating from High school, he applied to Disney.
They hired him as a popcorn salesman. With his foot in the door and every chance
he got, he would go to the art departments to meet and learn from the old
craftsman and the talented people there. In a years time he was given a chance
to work in the Model shop. From there he moved to the Display dept. where he
learned how to build animated windows that were displayed down Disney’s Main
Street. Disney was a great school to learn how to weld, sculpt, paint and
fabricate props and displays out of fiberglass and a wide range of materials.
In 1990 he left Disney to work for Michael Jackson. He
helped conceive and develop his
Neverland Ranch. In 1995 he started his own
business in Orlando. They built architectural models for theme parks and real
estate developers around the world. |
